Arik

Update: 9/7 - It's been a long couple of weeks for little Arik. A lot of pain, fevers, not eating, not walking, and for all of us, a lot of emotion. Arik is having daily physical therapy, ice packs, cold laser therapy, massage, and his medication regimen is nothing to shake a stick at.

We are fairly certain that Arik has vaccine induced HOD. What does that mean? It means that sometimes, too many vaccines are given at once and these giant breed puppies can't handle it.  Puppies (giant breed especially) should never have their rabies vaccine and a combination vaccine on the same day. At a minimum, they should be spaced 3 weeks apart. Depending on state requirements for rabies vaccinations, Great Dane puppies should not have their rabies vaccine until they are 6months old or older. See his page for therapy photos.

Sophie PDF Print E-mail

SophieMove over Duncan Hines, here comes something sweeter! Sophie is a 2yo female fawn that has come into rescue as a result of neglect. Animal Control removed Sophie from her home. Her owners often "forgot" to feed her. She's nervous right now and on the thin side. Sophie will be vetted and will need to wait her evaluation period before she can go to her forever home. She has lived with cats and seems to be ok with dogs.

She is new to rescue and currently not available; but stay tuned for updates!

Update 7/24 -  Abbey has come back into rescue, reactive to dogs. What that means is she barks and behaves poorly when she sees them and she is on leash. This is a problem she had the first time in rescue that we worked long and hard on. We had her able to greet dogs without this level of reaction. So what do we do about this now? We start over. Using a Gentle Leader and starting to work from a distance, we start desensitizing her.

Abbey had a trip to the pet store tonight. With treat in one hand and she in the other, we walked confidently through the store. We went when it wasn't quite so busy. She reacted by barking at first and wanted to get at the other dogs.  Using positive reinforcement and a Gentle Leader, 15 minutes later, her reaction had already deescalated. She was calmer, more confident, and feeling a bit better about herself. Abbey will need a pack leader who will always be that, her leader and someone who is willing to train with her. Continued exposure with positive and confident reinforcement will change her outlook. She did it once before...she will get there again!

Abbey is an amazing dog who is extraordinarily affectionate and  playful. She is a powerhouse in the yard and her favorite game is soccer. She can easily launch 5ft in the air to catch her ball. Stay tuned for updates.

Utley PDF Print E-mail

Utley

Update 7/24: Utley is doing wonderfully. He was very uncomfortable at the vet and his foster family has been taking him for social visits. He's affectionate and playful and has made great progress while in rescue. He will need a confident leader that knows how to set limits with him and teach him good manners. He's very active so plenty of exercise and playtime is very important. Someone that works all day would not be suitable for him.  He needs lots of stimulation to keep both his body and his mind in good shape. His HOD is well under control on a low protein food, controlled exercise, and glucosamine supplements.

Utley is definitely a dog for an experienced dog owner.  While he is growing and learning quickly, he will need firm and regular training with his new family.  His rough start in life shows with some bad habits and occasional unpredictable behavior.  He is not available for families with young children, but will become a favorite companion for an active, experienced household.
